If a person was to take a old television antenna that was still in good shape and put it up as high as they could on a mast above their house . Use a good quality RG 6U coax cable such as a Belden 1829AC which is sweep tested. Even in the central Pennsylvania area - you can expect to pick up radio traffic as far as 120 miles in all directions.
By re-purposing a old television antenna - you can expect gains in the area of about 6 to 16 db over a regular pull up - push on antenna.
The down side is the loss in the cable which becomes larger the higher up in frequency you go.
I have not yet experimented with horizontally vs vertically polarized antenna - so I cannot tell you which way to mount the antenna on the mast.
A antenna rotor would help if you wanted to listen to signals in other directions.
